The 77,000 SqFt Squadron Operations/AMU hangar houses complete maintenance and operation functions for the 199th Fighter Squadron at Hickam Air Force Base for the Hawaii Air National Guard. The structure comprises approximately 34,215 SqFt of administrative area and 42,785 SqFt of hangar space. Sure Steel was contracted by Watts Constructors to erect the 1,278 tons of structural steel totaling over 13,500 man hours. Planning and coordination was vital in the installation of the roof trusses. The hangar had a clear span of over 200’ making the trusses very heavy. Sure Steel built the trusses in ‘kits’ on the ground and using a duo of cranes, installed the trusses in segments. The project has received Platinum certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
